The Moon Phase 36 comes in three different models — this review is for the IW459306, which features a polished stainless steel case, blue alligator leather strap made by Santoni, and blued Arabic Numerals and dial hands.
36mm in diameter, the silver-plated dial looks beautiful surrounded by the polished steel fixed bezel. With a moonphase display at 12 o’clock and a blued design, this elegant timepiece is a certain classic.

This new Da Vinci uses a self-winding mechanical movement that is Swiss built, in-house, by IWC Schaffhausen. The IWC calibre 35800 is an automatic movement that powers your traditional three-hand display as well as a moonphase indicator at 12 o’clock.
With a Sellita SW300-1 base, measurement of 25.60 mm diameter, 25 jewels, 28,800 v.p.h., and a 42 hour power reserve, this calibre is simple and elegant — perfect for this Da Vinci Moon Phase 36.
Featuring high-grade Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, IWC gives us the best material possible in this 36. Convex in shape, this Sapphire glass offers an absolutely stunning view of the silver-plated dial and blued accents beneath.
At 36mm in diameter, the Moon Phase 36 will look good on any man or woman’s wrist.
The blue alligator leather strap is made by Santoni and complements the blue accents and offers a wonderful pattern and texture to this luxury piece.
The three-hand timekeeping and addition of one complication — the beautiful Moon Phase display — this timepiece is perfectly elegant and a wonderful ode to Da Vinci.
The only issue I have with this piece is the water resistance. Since the case backing is solid, the Sapphire crystal is solid, and the watch is assembled by world-renowned IWC Schaffhausen, one would expect a water resistance of at least 50 meters (10 ATM / 10 BAR) would be offered.
However, this model only has a W/R of 3 BAR, which is around 30 meters / 99 feet. Obviously, you would not take this watch into the water on purpose, but for the sake of safety and accidental drops in water, I would feel better if IWC had given this piece a better W/R.
The functionality of the Moon Phase 36 is beyond reproach. Of course as an IWC, one would expect nothing but the best — and you will certainly get it in this beautiful model. The timepiece uses the best Swiss made technology in its automatic movement, and using the calibre 35800, this self-winding mechanical will certainly keep time with precision as well as display the moon phase, which is the main attraction.
The Sapphire crystal and solid backing certainly keep the watch protected from the elements — this watch will certainly last for many, many decades to come.
The Moon Phase display is the main attraction of this self-named Moon Phase 36 model. Simple and elegant in design, this timepiece shows off the display at 12 o’clock, where the iconic IWC Schaffhausen logo sits within the display subdial.
One really unique part of this model is the case back. Typically, you have either a transparent case backing or a solid backing — this timepiece offers wearers a custom solid steel case back engraved with the Flower of Life. This is an homage to Leonardo Da Vinci, who studied this geometric figure throughout his life and devoted art and drawings to it. For the IWC brand, this engraving symbolizes the connection between, technology, creativity, and beauty.
Blue is a highly sought-after design from leather straps to blued hands and dial accents. This Da Vinci collection timepiece has both. The applied Arabic Numerals are blued; as are the hour, minute, and hacking seconds hand. The alligator leather strap completes the blue design and is made of high quality leather by Santoni.
The retail price for this new IWC is $8,500.00 — an incredible price for an incredible timepiece. The Da Vinci will be released in Summer 2017.
